Are Cheap Sunglasses Safe? What to Check Before You Buy

Nashi Pear 2549 square sunglasses on a white background

Price doesn't decide whether sunglasses protect your eyes. The lens does. Here's what actually matters.

1. Look for UV protection on the label

"UV400" or "100% UVA/UVB protection" means the lenses block ultraviolet light, the part of sunlight that can harm your eyes over time.

2. Darker doesn't mean safer

A dark tint only cuts brightness. Dark lenses without UV protection can be worse than none, because your pupils open wider behind them.

3. Polarized is about glare, not UV

Polarized lenses cut reflections off water, roads and car hoods. They're great for driving and fishing, but they're a separate feature from UV protection.

4. Check the fit

Frames that sit too far from your face let sunlight in from the sides.
