How to Clean and Care for Your Sunglasses and Glasses

A few small habits keep your sunglasses and glasses clear and scratch-free for much longer. Here's what works, and what to skip.

How to clean your lenses

  1. Rinse first. Hold the glasses under lukewarm running water to wash away dust and grit. Wiping dry grit across a lens is one of the most common causes of scratches.
  2. Use a drop of mild dish soap. Pick one without lotion, and rub it gently over both sides of the lenses with your fingertips.
  3. Rinse and dry. Rinse off the soap, shake off the extra water, and dry with a clean microfiber cloth.

What to avoid

  • Shirts, paper towels and tissues. Their fibers and any trapped dust can scratch lenses.
  • Window cleaner and other strong cleaners. Ammonia and similar chemicals can damage lens coatings.
  • Hot water. Lukewarm is enough.

How to store them

  • Keep them in a case when you're not wearing them.
  • Never set them down lens-side down.
  • Don't leave them on a car dashboard. Strong heat can warp frames.
  • Try not to push them up on your head. It stretches the arms over time.

Everyday handling

  • Put them on and take them off with both hands, so the arms stay aligned.
  • If a screw feels loose, tighten it gently with a small eyeglass screwdriver.
